Meet Pris & Family
Mama Muse is our monthly series celebrating mothers in our community - sharing stories of motherhood, family, and place.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family
My name is Priscilla, they call me Pris, I’m half Indonesian half Dutch. My mother was born in Semarang, Java. My daughter Leia Soleil just turned 2, she’s a quarter Dutch, a quarter Indonesian, a quarter Italian and a quarter French. I’m the co-founder of WELIKEBALI together with my best friend Eve, a curated travel and lifestyle platform inspired by Bali and living with intention and a souvenir shop with island inspired merchandise.
What was the original heart behind starting @welikebali
When we traveled to Bali in 2009 we just wanted to share our day to day stories with our friends and family at the other side of the world. We started a blog where we wrote about everything we experienced, everything we did, what we ate, who we met and posted lots of photos alongside it. Nowadays welikebali has grown into a curated lifestyle and travel platform inspired by islandlife. It shares thoughtful curated travel guides, our personal stories, recommendations around travel, food, family life and (slow) living with a strong focus on Bali, but always through a wider, global lens. We design and run our very own Bali based brand @welikebalithelabel with sunkissed souvenirs which are ethically made here on the island and available in more than 20 stores in Bali, Lombok and Nusa Lembongan.
What first drew you to surfing?
Definitely island life, the beach and the ocean. I’ve always been fascinated by the sea and love a challenge. We met a few Indonesian local boys who were working at the beach who were so passionate about surfing which made us want to try it as well. As soon we had our first lesson I was sold. It’s a sense of freedom and the adrenaline kick what keeps on calling me back. Whenever I enter the water & go for a surf it feels like resetting my mind and soul. A moment where I can really enjoy being in the present and not think about anything.
What does Bali mean as a place to raise your daughter?
I feel so lucky to be able to raise my daughter between such beautiful places. From the country where my mother was born, to the south-east coast of France, Biarritz, and another European country, Holland. Bali really is a place that has shaped us so much of who we are. Raising her here means growing up close to nature, the ocean, and a slower rhythm of life. It means absolute freedom to us. Learning different languages and cultures from a young age is everything. Bali also has taught us to slow down, to be present and to trust more. For us, Bali isn’t just an island. It’s a feeling of freedom, community and choosing a life that feels true and being able to share that with our daughter is something we’ll never take for granted.
What does an ideal day look like for you and your family?
We wake up early with the sound of chirping birds and start the day with coffee and breakfast at home watching the sun rise. After a bit of play time at home, we hop on our bikes and head to the beach, always! Leia will play in the sand, drink a coconut and have fruit at the beach from the ibu’s while mama goes for a surf. Once Im done surfing I’ll take Leia for a splash in the ocean, she loves the water! We’ll have lunch at a beachside warung like Othree in Canggu or a nice restaurant nearby like Shadyshack. After lunch, I usually take Leia home for her nap. When she wakes, we either head back to the beach for sunset, swim in our pool, or go to a playground to meet friends. Once the sun goes down, we finish the day with an early dinner at our favorite Italian restaurant La Baracca. Leia loves pizza! After that we go home, take a bath, read a book and have an early night in.
