Meet Akasha & Family
Raised in Bali and deeply connected to its rhythm, Akasha moves between motherhood and legacy with a quiet sense of ease. As the owner of Bodyworks Spa, the iconic family business founded by her mother, she continues to shape a space known for its sense of escape and atmosphere.
At home, she is mother to two year old Namkha, with her second child on the way, embracing a season that feels both expansive and deeply personal.
Rooted in presence and an appreciation for the everyday, her approach to both life and work is gentle, intentional, and grounded in what matters most.
To start, can you introduce yourself - a little about you, your family, and what fills your days?
My name is Akasha, my mother is German and my father is Dutch Indonesian, but my brother and I were both raised here in Bali. My parents have been here since the ‘80s so it is very much home for all of us. I left for boarding school in Thailand and then went onto living in the US for a few years, but like many of my other friends who grew up here, I felt the call to come back to my island home and continue planting my roots here. I have a beautiful two year old son named Namkha, so my days are a balancing act of spending quality time with him and my husband - usually at the beach or at home - and also coming to Bodyworks and spending time with the team here.
Can you share a little about your journey with Bodyworks Bali, and what it’s been like being part of something your mother originally created?
I fully came on board about ten years ago, and it’s been quite an adventure so far. The pandemic really brought a lot of change for the company as we had to move from our beloved original spot we had called home for 21 years, and build from the ground up again. Although stressful at times, it forced me out of my comfort zone and to really trust that this was the right direction to take - my mother and I ended up really strengthening our working relationship, and we had a lot of fun in the creative process together. I feel grateful for the opportunity to continue her legacy.
How has motherhood shaped the way you approach your work and daily life?
I think motherhood has mostly taught me presence - to slow down and see the beauty in the little moments, and that has trickled down to all aspects of my life. I have a newfound appreciation for all the things I would have perhaps overlooked before having a child. There is magic in the mundane!
With a busy toddler and another baby on the way, how are you experiencing this season of motherhood?
Its full of polarity! Elated to welcome my daughter to the family, but also grieving Namkha not being my only baby anymore. So many mixed emotions on the brink of a big transition, but I feel very grateful for my growing family.
What do you hope people feel when they walk through or experience Bodyworks Spa?
I hope they feel a sense of escape, whatever that may mean to them - a total change in scenery, a new ambiance, a fresh colour pallette and sensory experience that puts them in a totally different world from their own. I love spaces and experiences that feel otherworldly and playful, so I hope that we can bring that feeling to our guests.
What does self-care look like for you in this season of life?
To be painfully predictable, I always love a good massage or facial. There’s also nothing like a swim in the sea, a long lunch with friends or getting stuck into a great novel in bed.
